NORTH CAROLINA ALLIANCE OF BLACK SCHOOL EDUCATORS
ACCOMPLISHMENTS & AWARDS UNDER THE LEADERSHIP

Dr. Betty Howell Gray, Executive Director & NC NABSE Affiliate Leader

Prior to Dr. Gray’s relocation to Charlotte, N. C. in 2010, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Delta Upsilon Omega Chapter presented her with the 2008 W.E.B. Dubois Talented Tenth Award in recognition of her service in Leading and Uplifting Seattle’s Community for over 30 years. She is a native of Goldsboro, North Carolina.

2011 THE MAYA ANGELOU WOMEN WHO LEAD EXCELLENT AWARD

  • Sponsoring A Series of 20 Parent Forums serving over 500 parents focusing on workshops and seminars to assist parents in navigating the school system for a quality Program for children. In Partnership with U.S. Department of Education.

2016 NORTH CAROLINA LONG LEAF PINE

  • The highest honor for extraordinary Community Service is bestowed by the Governor and State of
    North Carolina for NCABSE’S involvement with service to schools and the community. The Launching of My Brother’s Keeper Program using NABSE’s AA Males Signature Program.

CLASS OF 2020 - 50 MOST INFLUENTIAL WOMAN BY MECKLENBURG TIMES

  • Recognized for ongoing passionate leadership ensuring school districts are providing a quality education for all students focusing on teaching and learning.
  • NC NABSE Affiliates provides ongoing Professional Development Activities for school leaders, teachers, students and community to improve student learning focusing on literacy and equity.

THE NORTH CAROLINA GENERAL ASSEMBLY, 40TH SENATORIAL DISTRICT OF NORTH CAROLINA

  • Dr. Joyce Waddell presented Dr. Gray and NCABSE with a certificate of honor for launching a successful My Brother’s Keeper Program using NABSE’s Signature Program & Community Forums
  • Over 5,000 African American Males and Males of Color were served in mentoring and tutoring with an Annual Conference.

NC NABSE AFFILIATES

Under the leadership of Dr. James Pughsley, CMS first African American Superintendent, Greater Charlotte ABSE was organized with Dr. Daisy Walker as the first President. Six other NC Affiliates were organized under the Leadership of Dr. Betty Howell Gray in partnership with NCDPI, Former State Superintendent June Atkinson: Dr. Marvin Connelly, NCABSE first president; Wayne County ABSE & ABSE at UNCC in 2012. In 2021, two state affiliates: sponsors, Curriculum & Associates: Georgia ABSE, Virginia ABSE; Cumberland County ABSE; Wake County ABSE; and WS/Forsyth County ABSE. A total of seven North Carolina NABSE Affiliates and growing for future generations.

  • 2020 Charlotte Mecklenburg Black Excellence Award by The Black Political Caucus of Charlotte Mecklenburg
  • NAACP Charlotte-Mecklenburg Business Award: Organizations who empower communities to take a stand to create a positive change.
  • 2020 Class of 50 Most Influential Women Award for creating change in Charlotte-Mecklenburg.
  • 2010 NABSE Phenomenal Women Award (Organizer of NABSE Affiliates)
  • 2018 County News Maker of the Year Certificate of Honor to Dr. Betty Howell Gray for launching the first My Brother’s Keeper Forum
  • 2024 Champions of Change Award, Professional Development Events and Inducted into Charlotte Mecklenburg BCDI of the Carolinas Council of Elders
